Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano is located near Porta Catania, formerly called the “Touch” because it was near to a \" wide Touch doorway \", an area so called because in the late Norman period town meetings of the townspeople took place here, said \"touches\", that were announced by the tolling of bells. The palazzo, built in the late 14th and early 15th century to house the Spuches family, is a masterpiece of Sicilian Gothic architecture with characteristic elements of Arabic and Norman times. ... Continua a leggere The building was later acquired by the city of Taormina in 1964 and designated as the home of the Mazzullo Foundation. The building is on three levels. Access to the ground floor is via a separate entrance on the south elevation of the building, while the first floor is connected by an external staircase. In place of this escalators and drawbridges were once used. The first and second floor are connected by an internal staircase that probably originally connected the master floors. The second floor is characterized by the presence of four imposing Gothic mullioned windows that overlook the garden. The latter, characterized by flowerbeds with Mediterranean plants and flowers, including rose bushes and a wonderful Giacaranda tree is outdoor exhibition space, where some of the Mazzullo sculptures can be admired and cultural events take place. Here the permanent presence of the works of Mazzullo connect well with the history of the Palazzo, because they seem to summarize and tell the story of the different cultures and civilizations that only here are fused and blurred together.
