Taormina’s Villa Comunale, consisting of palm trees, cactus and a vast amount of flowers that in spring intoxicate the mind and the heart, is a viable alternative to the crowded main streets. Once inside its gates, long trails invite you to stroll among magnolias, hibiscus and colorful bougainvillea bushes which with stone balustrades frame the breathtaking views. Continua a leggere An alchemy possible today, thanks to Lady Florence Trevelyan. This English noblewoman, cousin of Queen Victoria lived in Taormina from 1884 and here she married the mayor at that time, Prof. Salvatore Cacciola. The park was the site of his home and to her we owe the creation of the typical English garden in which were placed many species of rare plants. She was responsible for the presence of particular buildings called victorian follies with an ornamental purpose which were built on her request. The buildings of her conception were structures characterized by a mixture of architectural styles, Romantic, Gothic and Rococo. The buildings were used to house the friends of the noblewoman or as quiet places for reading. Also the park was adorned with \"cromlechs\" megalithic monuments arranged in a circle forming a religious enclosure and the \"dolmen\" similar to the stone funeral constructions of the third millennium BC, built in memory of her five dogs. Only in 1923 did the park become the public garden of Taormina.
