Church Santa Domenica
Halfway along the Giovanni Di Giovanni road stands the Church of Saint Domenica, a Virgin and Martyr of Tropea who was martyred at the age of 15 on 6th July, 303 A.D. The church, dating back at least to 1600, is characterized by a very simple and modest architecture. Continua a leggere On top of the altar, in a round is painted the image of St. Domenica with the palm of martyrdom in her hand , to the right of this high arch, in a niche, there are the statues of Saints. Cosmas and Damian, the two brothers, who were martyred in Egea in Cilicia (Asia Minor) in 303 A.D., where during the same persecution of Diocletian and his associates, Saint Domenica was also killed. Their feast is celebrated on 26th September. On the right upon entering, over a mock altar we find a large painting from 1709 by the Messina artist Vincenzo Tuccari which represents the Madonna of the Letter, patron saint of Messina, between St. Pancrazio and St. Procopio, the two Bishop Saints who were martyred in Taormina with the background of the landscape of Taormina and its surroundings. The church stands on a pedestal at different levels that follows the downhill nature of the terrain, in fact, the access to the churchyard is only possible via a flight of steps in Taormina stone.
