Church of Madonna della Rocca
One of the most scenic churches in the world is that of Madonna della Rocca, built by exploiting the shape of the rock cave, part of his ceiling is in fact bare rock. The origin of the Sanctuary of Saint Maria della Rocca is surrounded by legend that tells of a young shepherd, who seized by a sudden storm, took refuge with his sheep in this cave.... Continua a leggere In the midst of a blinding flash of lightning, the shepherd saw a beautiful woman at the bottom of the cave who was holding a blond haired child. Frightened he ran and told his parents what had happened , who did not believe what he said. But the young man insisted that the parents went with him to the cave. On arrival in a wide crack they found a painting in which there was the image of the woman just seen by the shepherd , but the child she held in her arms was headless, that is the paint that reproduced the baby\'s head was missing. Probably the oil painting in the cave had been hidden during the Iconoclasm (breaking of sacred images), and there it remained abandoned until it was seen by the young shepherd during the storm. Of course, this story about the apparition of the Madonna and Child was exploited by the clergy, that invoking the miracle, made this a place of pilgrimage during which the holy image was worshipped on a temporary altar. Probably weathering will have been the main cause of the lack of the child\'s head in the painting which for too long was exposed to the humidity of the cave. Today, instead of the painting, behind a picture of the Madonna that bears the inscription \"In me gratia omnis\". Eccl. XXIV, there are only a few scratches on the rock, the main attraction of the sanctuary.
